So much of leadership is thought of as external. Strategy, board plans, understanding others motivations. All of that is important but so often we miss the other side of that coin. Understanding ourselves.
After 36 years in executive leadership at Boeing, Dave Hyem said one of the most important lessons he learned was this:
Know who you are under pressure.
Not just who you are when everything is humming but who you are when the pressure mounts. As an engineer, he learned that under stress, he could get overly analytical leading to more details, scrutiny and faster decisions.
So he told his team, “When I’m under pressure, I tend to tighten around the details. If that starts to feel overwhelming, tell me.”
That kind of self-awareness builds trust.
Leadership is often framed as something external. Strategy. Performance. Influence. But so much of it is internal regulation.
Do you know how do you show up at your best?
What about when things get stressful?
And does anyone around you know the difference?
